Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are eager to spread out the red carpet for TESLA, the world’s premium electric carmaker, to establish a production facility in their states. The state like Gujarat is offering 1,000 hectares in Mundra, on the Kutch coast, for Tesla India.
Tesla is undecided whether they should come to a faraway region in Gujarat or dig deep in Bengaluru, said by the government official in Gujarat. Maharashtra has not received any response from the Tesla corporation since their last meeting in 2020.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa tweeted on January 12 that Tesla India would establish a research and development facility in the state, but he then removed the tweet. In February, he announced that Tesla would establish a manufacturing facility in Karnataka. He cited Tesla after the unveiling of a Rs 7,725 crore industrial corridor in Tumakuru, around 60 kilometres from Bengaluru, that will create 2.8 lakh jobs.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa wished Tesla all the best, shortly after the company registered with the Registrar of Companies with a Bengaluru address by saying Karnataka will pave the way for India’s transition to green mobility. The state of Gujarat has offered land in Mundra, both inside and outside Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ). The APSEZ covers 8,400 hectares, half of which is undeveloped. The official said that they have assured the Tesla India that land will not be a problem. Meanwhile, the company have not decided whether the new unit in India will be a pure export unit or a hybrid, according to the official. At Mundra, APSEZ manages the largest commercial port and special economic zone. SEZs are declared duty-free zones that are exempt from Indian customs laws.
Gujarat’s chief minister, Vijay Rupani, announced the Gujarat Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 last month to help create and sustain an electric vehicle ecosystem in the state. The policy subsidizes the purchase of electric vehicles and also provides funding for the installation of essential charging infrastructure.

The government of Gujarat is attempting to establish an electric vehicle hub in Mundra and has proposed by allocating land for Tesla‘s ancillary operations. Land for an electric vehicle battery manufacturing unit and other component makers is included, as per the source from the government officials.
Tesla India has yet to give the state government with a list of demands and conditions for the project’s implementation. The official said that the land in Gujarat is significantly cheaper than in Bengaluru, but there is a scarcity of skilled labour, and it is tough to lure Fortune 500 businesses to far-flung regions like Mundra.
In Gujarat, the company will not only be the first electric vehicle manufacturer. The company will also import, distribute, sell, service, maintain, and repair electric vehicles. Tesla will also establish stationary energy storage systems and equipment, energy generation systems and equipment, including solar panels, solar electrical systems, according to documents filed with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) in Bengaluru.
